Yugoslavia won the second Olympic handball tournament. In the first round, they defeated all three opponents (Japan, the United States, and Hungary to take first place in the group and join seven other teams in advancing to the second round. There, they defeated both of the other teams they played (West Germany and Romania). First place in the division earned Yugoslavia the chance to appear in the gold medal game, where they defeated Czechoslovakia. Handball at the 1972 Summer Olympics was the second appearance of the sport at the Olympics, returning to the Olympic program after a 36 year absence. ...
