He has won the Andros Trophy Ice Racing Championship 10 times, but primarily races in touring cars, although he won the British Formula 2 and European Formula 3000 titles early in his career. He won the French Touring Car championship in 1995, and has also raced in the German and Italian championships, and has also raced at Le Mans, and a one-off in the ETCC. In 2005 he also competed in selected rounds of the Australian V8 Supercar series, winning the 2005 Sandown 500 with Craig Lowndes. For several years he primarily raced in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC), initially for Audi before joining Vauxhall and taking his first win in 1999. On November 12, 2005 it was officially announced that he would be switching to the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC), driving for SEAT Sport. This made him one of three drivers called Muller in the championship, alongside BMW drivers Jorg and Dirk. A pair of 2nd places in the opening meeting showed that he was a likely frontrunner, his first win then coming in round 5 at Brands Hatch. That is the remarkable record of Yvan Muller in the BTCC.
It is not 61 race victories (not even Yvan is that good, although with 35 to his name he is currently the joint-third most successful BTCC driver of all time, and needs just one more to equal Alain Menu).
The top ten finishers in the second race of the day are reversed to form the grid for the third race and it soon became clear that Muller had tenth, and therefore pole, in his sights.

From a season in Formula 3000 in 1993, Muller made the move to touring cars with BMW in France from 1994 to 1995, culminating in the Championship that year.
