Zachary "Zac" Dawson has been one of the most talked about 2nd year players in the AFL in 2006. For the first eight games of 2006, Alistair Clarkson played the young man as fullback, and on more than one occasion was comprehensively beaten. In particular, Collingwood giant Anthony Rocca kicked 8 goals on Dawson as he outmuscled and outplayed him. Alistair Clarkson was widely criticised for the decison to keep him in the team and at his position, as he is seen as too skinny and not strong enough to play at the elite level. Dawson persevered, but was dropped from the team after round 8, but rebounded for 4 games (Rounds 15-18).

Aside from being played at fullback, Dawson also has played as a quick, mobile defender. He was selected with pick 41 in the 2003 draft.
