The Zambian African National Congress was a political organisation dedicated to promoting the rights of black people in Zambia. The party grew out of the North Rhodesian African Nationalist Congress in the early 1950s. Zambia did soon gain indepenence from the UK but the ZANC did not gain power. Instead, it was banned by United National Independence Party leader and President Kenneth Kaunda when the country became a one-party state in 1972.
