Zavodovski Island is a volcanic island in the South Sandwich Islands. It lies 350 kilometers southeast of South Georgia at latitude 56° 30' south, longitude 27° 57' west.
The island is roughly square with diameter of about 5 kilometers and a peak elevation of 551 meters above sea level. The volcano Mount Curry dominates the western side of the island while the eastern half is a low-lying lava plain. Mount Curry is believed to be active with fresh lava reported in 1830 and numerous indications of activity since.
Despite being the northernmost of the South Sandwich Islands and nearest to South Georgia, Zavodovski Island is uninhabited.
Zavodovski Island, one of the 11 in the South Sandwich chain, has an active volcano and no signs of bird nesting areas or seal colonies.
Zavodovski Island is the northernmost of the South Sandwich Islands, which extend southward in a shallow arc open to the west.
After visiting Zavodovski Island, we came back to an interesting pair of twin islands, Candlemas and Vindication, also in the South Sandwich chain, which are both active volcanoes with a one- or two-mile wide channel between them (where we spent the morning sampling).
