Zealots are melee attackers, which means they have to get to point-blank range to enemy units or buildings, similar to Zerglings or Terran Firebats, to attack. Zealots wield a pair of psionic blades, which do more damage (16 and 22 after a triple weapon upgrade) than Terran Marines and Zerglings. Zealots (in versions 1.08 and greater) have 100 hit points, 60 shield points and 1 point of armor.
Zealots and Zerglings When facing the Zerg Swarm, it is important to remember that although Zealots beat Zerglings in a 1 to 3 ratio (and a single weapon upgrade at the Forge allows a Zealot to kill an unupgraded Zergling in just two strikes), Zerglings are much cheaper. Thus, unless the Protoss Executor manages to minimize the amount of Zerglings attacking each Zealot (by hiding them behind minerals, microing well, etc.), Zerglings will win the encounter. Zealots are still a very good choice against Zerg opponents, since simply building and commanding mass hordes of Zerglings is complicated. Zealots are also hardy enough to act as a shield for other Protoss units, such as Archons and High Templar, while also causing respectable damage by themselves. "Speed Zealots" A Zealot with the Leg Enchancements speed upgrade (available at the Citadel of Adun) is a powerful weapon against Tank Pushes, since it can quickly run up to Siege Tanks in Siege Mode, draw splash damage from other tanks and provoke Spider Mines to explode near Terran forces, often causing massive damage. Zealots with the speed upgrade are also much less vulnerable to Hydralisks. The Marines of the Terran Confederacy The Terrans are the name given to the human colonists in the StarCraft universe used to distinguish them from the humans of Earth. ...
Zealot Bombs Another way to use Zealots against Siege Tanks (in Siege Mode) effectively, is to load multiple Zealots into Shuttles and unload them one by one in the middle of tight Tank formations. This tactic, called "Zealot Bombing", can produce even greater results than simply ordering Zealots to attack enemy Tanks.
Damage Calculation Psi-blades each do 8 points of damage without upgrades (resulting in a total of 16 points), so a unit with 1 point of armor will in fact receive only 7 points of damage from each blade, resulting in the disappointing total of 14 (-2 points of damage for every point of armor, instead of the usual -1). This weakness is most apparent when facing fully upgraded Ultralisks, which have 6 points of armor. When facing Ultralisks, it is advised to support Zealot forces with heavy hitters, such as Archons or Dragoons. Counters Zealots are melee-attack units and enemy ranged-attack units such as Marines, Vultures, Siege Tanks, Dragoons, Reavers, Hydralisks and Lurkers can often do incredible damage to Zealots. Moreover, any air units with a ground attack can defeat Zealots. The problem is, if the "ground attack" isn't strong enough, Zealots can just soak up damage while ripping the enemy base apart. Scouts and Wraiths are rarely used to counter a Zealot army, since their ground attack is very weak, while the stronger and plentiful Mutalisks do very well. Finally, although Terran Firebats seem weaker than Zealots, they are an excellent counter: gathering Firebats in groups (so that the splash damage from their attacks intersects), or supporting them with Medics is enough to guarantee that Firebats prevail over almost any adequate number of Zealots.
