Als Zele op het ogenblik van de schenking een domein was van Lotusa (zelf een stichting van de heilige Amandus [† 675/680] of van één van diens volgelingen), dan was het dus al ouder.
Pas door de schenking van Karel de Grote aan Ludgerus is Zele aanwijsbaar in de geschiedenis getreden, kerkelijk verbonden met en tevens "wingewest" van een Duitse abdij, en dat tot na de Franse Revolutie.
