Famous Appliances Zenith are, perhaps, best known for the first pratcical wireless TV remote control, the 'Space Command', developed in 1956. A remote control is a electronic device used for the remote operation of a machine. ...
1956 was a leap year starting on Sunday of the Gregorian calendar. ...
The original TV remote control was a wired version, released in 1950, that soon attracted complaints about an unsightly length of cable from the viewer's chair to the TV set. Cmdr. Eugene McDonald, Zenith President and Founder, ordered his engineers to develop a wireless version but the use of radio waves was soon discounted due to interference issues. The 1955 'Flash-Matic' remote system used a highly directional photo flash tube in the handheld unit that was aimed at sensitive photoreceivers in the four front corners of the TV cabinet. However, bright sunlight falling on the TV was found to activate the controls! 1950 was a common year starting on Sunday (link will take you to calendar). ...
Lead Engineer Eugene Polley then suggested that ultrasonic sound be used as a trigger mechanism. This was produced in the handheld unit by mechanically-struck aluminium rods of carefully constructed dimensions - a receiver in the TV responded to the different frequencies this action produced. The miniaturisation of electronics meant that, eventually, the sounds were produced in the remote unit electronically but the operating principle remianed in use until the 1980's when it was superseded by the infra-red light system. Zenith's other famed product family was the 'Trans-Oceanic' and 'Royal' series of shortwave portable radios, in production from 1942 to 1979. The Trans-Oceanic was the name given to a series of portable radios produced from 1942 to 1962 by Zenith Radio. ...
Zeinith Was also known for help in the production of the modern Clamshell Laptop Earlier Attepmts at a portable computer produced clunky, heavy, unusable luggables, that needed a wall outlet to work anyway. Zeinith Came up with the idea of haveing a " Clamshell" Design, where the screen folds on the top of the computers keyboard, which was placed directly above the CPU. But, Zenith Did not recive recignition for the design. People wern't interested in portable computers at the time. Back then, It was all about computing power, When people finally were interested, it was too late. A Differnt Company Had already claimed the idea.
