Kuensel Newspaper - How Zhemgang derived its name (0 words)
Zhemgang dzongkhag derives its name from a 12th century monastery built by Lam Zhang Dorji Dragpa, a scholar-sage of Drukpa Kagyud School according to a Bhutanese researcher.
According to the researcher, the monastery, which was later rebuilt as a dzong in the 17thcentury had a significant role in the evolution and shaping of the history of Khengrig Namsum.
In 1963 when Zhemgang was created a separate dzongkhag, the dzong was renovated under the command of His late Majesty, King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk and renamed as Dechen Yangtse or Druk Dechen Yangtse dzong.

Zhemgang is considered one of the most inaccessible dzongkhags in the country with most of its gewogs still situated far from road heads.
Despite the huge development potential, Zhemgang until the beginning of the nineties, was considered as one of the least developed as compared to most dzongkhags in Bhutan.
Zhemgang has come a long way and in many aspects it is different than what it used to be a decade ago.
