The Zimmermann Telegram was a telegram dispatched by the Foreign Secretary of the German Empire, Arthur Zimmermann, on January 16, 1917, to the German ambassador in Mexico, Heinrich von Eckardt, at the height of World War I.
The Zimmermann telegram as it was sent from the German ambassador in Washington to Mexico.
In an unexpected move, Zimmermann confirmed the authenticity of the telegram on March 3, and again in a speech on March 29, 1917.

Philip Zimmermann (born February 12, 1954) is the creator of Pretty Good Privacy (PGP), the most widely used email encryption software in the world.
After the government dropped its case without indictment in early 1996, Zimmermann founded PGP Inc. That company was acquired by Network Associates (NAI) in December 1997, where he stayed on for three years as a Senior Fellow.
Zimmermann is also a fellow at the Stanford Law School's Center for Internet and Society.
