Zines or fan zines are self published pamphlets. Originally fan zines mostly consisted of science fiction movie or independent music fans writing to critique or start a discussion about something they felt was not talked about in popular culture. The term fan zines now mostly refers a personal diary or collection of stories about one's life (mostly comedy) put into a pamphlet and made somewhat widely available. Zines are also made as a form of "skill sharing" one could learn about anything from DIY herbal abortions, to screen printing or train hopping. A large portion of zines are on the subject of leftist politics, particularly anarchism, and direct action. They are traded by mail or in most infoshops aroud the world.
Zines are publications done for the love of doing them, not to make a profit or a living.
Zines can be found at your funkier bookstores (especially in larger cities), and also at infoshops or zinelibraries.
Most zine publishers, between work, family, and other real life commitments, don't have as much time to spend on their zines as they might like, but if you don't hear back within a couple of months, send the zinester a polite follow-up note.
Zine World is written, edited, published, and mailed out by an all-volunteer staff who believe free speech is for everyone, not just for giant corporations.
In addition to the reviews, Zine World covers news nobody else does: When publishers are brought up on charges for what they've published, when kids are kicked out of school for creating a zine, we try to spread the word, letting our readers know what they can do to help.
Pronounced "zeens," zines are one of the staples of the underground press.
