PBIO 450 Lecture Notes - Commelinidae -- Spring 1999 (951 words)
There is no doubt that the Bromeliaceae are distinct from the bulk of the Zingiberidae, and their removal to a basal position within the Commelinidae is full supportable as demonstrated long ago by Dahlgren & Ramussen (1983) and remains unquestioned even in light of the rbcL data.
Inclusion of the remaining members of the Zingiberidae is less clear.
While the Bromeliales and Zingiberidales formed his Zingiberidae, Philydraceae, Pontederiaceae and Haemodoraceae are placed in the Liliales along with Velloziaceae.
