Encyclopedia > Zizhi Tongjian

Zizhi Tongjian (traditional Chinese character: 資治通鑑; simplified Chinese character: 资治通鉴; pinyin Zīzh Tōngjan, Wade-Giles Tzu-chih t'ung-chien) is known to be a important Chinese history text of annual chronology. Sima Guang was the major contributor, from collecting primary sources, to drafting, to publication. Work on the book started in 1065 and ended in 1084. It recounts the history of China from Warring States Period to the end of Period of the Five Dynasties and the Ten Kingdoms. Literary meaning of the Chinese title is Comprehensive Mirror for Aid in Government.

Zizhi tongjian "The Comprehensive Mirror for Aid in Government" was compiled by Sima Guang between the years 1067 and 1084, and was first printed at Hangzhou in 1086.
Indeed, though Sima Guang and his imperial master were in complete disagreement on policies for the present day, the enforced retirement proved essential for the historian to complete the project in full and final form.
He is remembered for his work Zizhi Tongjian (資治通鑑/资治通鉴) and his rivalry with contemporary statesman Wang Anshi (王安石).

The commentaries (音註 yinzhu) of Hu Sanxing 胡三省 (1230-1287) are today an integral part of the Zizhi tongjian itself and include the shiwen 釋文 commentary of Shi Zhao 史炤 (1100-1160).
