Encyclopedia > Zoram

Zoram (BoM Arabic زورام Zūrām) was a servant of Laban in the Book of Mormon. According to the First Book of Nephi, Zoram led Nephi, who was disguised as Laban, into Laban's treasury. Nephi's appearance, along with the changing of his voice by the Lord to that of Laban, convinced Zoram to lead him to obtain the Brass Plates containing his people's genealogy and traditions. Later, after discovering who Nephi really was, Zoram swore allegiance to him, and was permitted to come with him, his father Lehi and Lehi's other sons to the Americas. In Latter-day Saint theology, the Arabic language is believed to be one of the contributory source languages of the Book of Mormon, along with Hebrew, Egyptian and also what was described as Syriac and Chaldean, presumed to be contemporary Aramaic and/or Akkadian. ... Zoram - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (248 words)
Nephi, speaking "in the voice of Laban" (1 Nephi 4:20) commanded Zoram to take the brass plates containing "a record of the Jews" (1 Nephi 3:3) to his brethren.
Zoram, "supposing that [he] spake of the brethren of the church" (1 Nephi 4:26) took the plates and carried them to where Nephi's brothers were waiting.
Zoram swore allegiance to them and was permitted to accompany Nephi and his brethren.
Alma 16 (3634 words)
7 And it came to pass that Zoram and his sons crossed over the river Sidon, with their armies, and marched away beyond the borders of Manti into the south wilderness, which was on the east side of the river Sidon.
Cultural: It is significant that we are told that "Zoram and his sons" crossed the river with "their armies." In the world of the Book of Mormon, clan organizations were still very important, and the military organization apparently followed clan lines as well.
We cannot tell the age of Zoram, but certainly if he had fighting age sons, Zoram had to be on the outside of his life as a combatant.
