Encyclopedia > Zumberak

Žumberak is a mountain situated between Croatia and Slovenia. The highest peak is Sveta Gera (Trdinov vrh on Slovene side), 1178 m (3865 ft). On Slovene side mountain is named Gorjanci and near highest point 90 meters high telecommunication tower is situated.

In 1999 Nature park (Park prirode) Žumberak - Samoborsko gorje was founded.

A military complex near the top of Sveta Gera created by the Yugoslav People's Army was a subject of a dispute between the two new countries in the 1990s, but the escalation was prevented due to amicable diplomacy. Full border delineation between Slovenia and Croatia is still pending.

The cities surrounding the mountain are Novo mesto, Metlika, Brežice, Črnomelj in Slovenia and Samobor and Ozalj in Croatia.

The name “Zumberak” itself it thought to be connected to the name of the Sichelberg fortress (Zumberak Old Town), which is then linked to the shape of the Zumberak mountains, which are shaped like a sickle (in German, die sichel = sickle, der Berg = hill).
Thus the name Zumberak could have got its name either by changing the name Schönberg into a slavic version “Zemberk”, today “Zumberak” or from the word Sichelberg which would be pronounced Zumberk, which is also close to its name, as it is today.
Zumberak Uskok agree to serve as defence forces in the area, and Zumberak becomes a part “Vojna Krajina” in 1578.
