History
Zvolen has been inhabited since the Paleolithic. In the 9th century, a Slavic settlement became a regional centre of what is now central Slovakia. In the 11th and 12th century, one of the largest medieval castles in Europe, Pustý hrad, was constructed. The town was granted municipal rights by king Béla IV in the 1230s. Later, Louis I the Great built a new castle, which became a popular hunting resort of Hungarian kings. Present Zvolen has a large wood factory situated near a heating company that provides much of the towns heat. It is also an important railroad hub. The Sliač airport offers direct flights to Prague. The town features a cinema, a few internet cafes, and many hotels in the center that serve wonderful local food and numerous bars, restaurants and clubs.
