Encyclopedia > Zwitterion

A zwitterion (from German "Zwitter" — "hybrid," "hermaphrodite") is a compound with acidic and basic groups in the same molecule. At neutral pH most zwitterions are therefore negatively charged anions and positively charged cations at the same time. Zwitterions usually have a high solubility in water due to their charged groups and a poor solubility in most organic solvents. The 1st-century BC sculpture The Reclining Hermaphrodite, in the Museo Palazzo Massimo Alle Terme in Rome In zoology, a hermaphrodite is an organism of a species whose members possess both male and female sexual organs during their lives. ... Zwitterions make good buffer solutions — they resist change to the pH of a solution by selective ionisation. In the presence of acids, zwitterions accept the hydrogen ions, removing them from the solution. In the presence of bases, zwitterions donate hydrogen ions to the solution, again balancing the pH. Buffer solutions are solutions which resist change in hydronium ion concentration (and consequent pH) upon addition of small amounts of acid or base, or upon dilution. ... Inhibiting leaching of fire retardant salts from wood with cyclic sulfonium zwitterion solution impregnant - Patent ... (0 words)
By "impregnating" is meant the filling of the voids and/or cell units beneath the surface of the wood substrate with an impregnant, such as a cyclic sulfonium zwitterion, a fire retardant salt or a mixture thereof.
The concentration of the cyclic sulfonium zwitterion in the aqueous solution and the amount of aqueous solution used in the impregnating process can be varied widely depending on the type of wood to be treated and the degree of leach resistance desired.
An o-cresol cyclic sulfonium zwitterion of the formula: ##STR6## was similarly formulated with FR-A. Aqueous formulations were prepared at a 30 percent solids level with salt:CSZ weight ratios of 1:1 and 8:1.
ZwitterioN's Wizard Spells (1752 words)
Excluding the piece of garment, the material component for the spell is the same with that of "Armor" spell; with the exception that the blessing priest should be at least of 9th level.
Zwitterion devised this spell taking idea from 'Sheet of Smallness' which he once owned.
The material component is a pinch of diamond dust [the same amount used in "Stoneskin" spell] and a metallic miniature of any weapon [which is not consumed].
