The LHBF-form was taught in the late nineteen thirties in Shanghai and Nanjing by Wu Yi Hui (1887-1961).[citation needed] It is said he had learned the art in three variants from three teachers: Yan Guoxing and Chan Guangbi from the province of Henan, and Chan Helu from Beijing. Wu Yi Hui combined these three variants to teach collectively with addended exercises. Many of Wu Yi Hui's students had martial arts backgrounds and modified the form to merge it with their own knowledge. The derived variants usually have standards in common: - Practitioners consider the art an internal martial art.
- The exercise-series usually has 66 named-forms and divided as two parts.
- The sequence of moves is the same in the variant styles.
- The starting movement is also repeated as the last, final movement.
However, according to an interview with Liu Xiao Ling of Rockville, MD on a Liuhe Bafa DVD, there are also differences between Liuhe Bafa and the other internal arts (Taijiquan, Xingyiquan, and Baguazhang): The difference between Liu He Bafa and Taiji is that Taiji is generally practiced at an even level, in other words the stance is practiced at an even height throughout the form. Also, in Taiji the rhythm is pretty constant, if for example it were a song its rhythm would be 3/4 or 4/4 throughout. There isn't very much variation in speed. Liu He Bafa, on the other hand, has changes in speed, it speeds up and slows down. XingYi is mostly linear movements and Bagua is mostly circular movements, but Liu He Bafa is in my experience a wavelike set of movements, hence it's also called "Water Boxing". The movements rise and fall, open and close, one gets the feeling of floating through the form and to the observer it is a very smooth and pleasant looking form. See also
