Prakasam is an administrative district in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. The district headquarters are located at Ongole. The district occupies an area of 17,626 km² and has a population of 3,054,941 (as of 2001). Districts are a form of local government in several countries. ...  About Ongole : The town was originally called 'Vangalaprolu', 'Vangavolu' and 'Vangolu' after the astrologer bearing the surname 'Vangolu' in the court of the Addanki kings. The earliest reference to this place is found in the inscriptions of the Pallava rulers, Vijayaskandavarma and Simhavarman, whose period of rule was assigned to the last quarter of the 3rd and the first quarter of the 4th centuries AD. 
 Ongole is a good business centre. Food and other items like Butter, Ghee, Cigar, Cereals, Pulses, Groundnut, and Pepper etc are being exported from here to different parts of the country. Bullocks from Ongole known as "Ongole Gitta" are renowned in the state. It is a prestige to have Ongole Bullocks in one's flock of cattle. Some the main towns in Prakasam district are Markapur, Chirala,Addanki, Kandukur, Giddalur, Podili, Dornala, Cumbum, Kanigiri and Chimakurthi. Each of the above towns have their own specialities. Markapur is in first place in India in slates manufacturing, and there is a historic and famous temple of God Chennakesava. Chilra town is famous for manufacturing and business of all types of cloths. Chimakurthi is famous for the granites. The world famous Galaxy granites supplied from here only. Dornala is just beside the Nallamala forest which is one of the big forests in India. Dornala is also known as diguva Srisailam, since it is very near to the historic pilgrim Srisailam (Srisailam is one of the most famous piligrims in India). Like this way each and every place in prakasam district has its own speciality.
