I find it very strange that Sweden is not included in the statistics shown when selecting All EU Countries (covering the period 1998-2000) and category Crime/Murders. At the same time Hungary is represented with a figure of 2005 during the same period and during which period Hungary was not a member of the EU.

Brazil has consistently had ono of the largest numbers of murders in the world (53,242 in 2002). This list is obviously not all-inclusive and needs to be updated to at least include Brazil!

How come Pakistan is not included? One of the worst country in the world.

Useful site, but lacks accuracy. For example South Africa is listed as having more murders by firearm than murders. But given the authorities reluctance to divulge meaningful statistics it is not surprising that these types of irregularities occur. Either way South Africa has become one of the most dangerous places in the world. Very sad.

For your information, there are more up to date crime stats / murders etc for South Africa at:
http://www.crimexposouthafrica.org/?q=node/247
Can you update your stats?

I think the murder firearm rate and murder rate are separate. i.e Thailand has a high murder firearm rate but not so high when you consider murder other ways. What has happened to Brazil and China i don't know, obviously the site does not have the stats.

2006 is the year for south africa, damn south africa was one of the very peacefull nations in the world country in 1996. know south africa is not a spot to go, crime is just like their is no police their.

Most probably South Africa would be topping this stats if it was up dated, with 18'000 murders in 2006.

If nothing happens very soon, how much murders will there be during 2010 world cup with so much easy targets (tourists) in the country???

No, Pakistan is safer than alot of the countries. There are not as many murders as there used to be. It's gotten better. I agree with the South Africa thing though...

I'm really kind of stunned a lot as I know the real thing that Japan has lots of murders like 637 and I guess that thing also means around 2 people would be killed per day.

Why?

Liz, I am a 6th grader who needs these people to complain so that this site will be up dated. I am sure that my classmates will agree.

Alot of countries which have very high murder rates and which have alot of murders were not mentioned on the list.

Brazil has between 49,000 to 50,000 murders a year Honduras has over 7,000 murders a year El Salvador has over 6000 murders a year and Guatemala has over 5,000 murders a year and none of those countries were on the list.

This list is old and out of date and needs to be updated to include other countries and up to date statistics.

India had 37170 murders. Is this in one year, and for which year? How do I find out the year to which any statistic applies?

Come on, Brazil should be at or near the TOP OF THE LIST! The murder rates there are CRAZY!I heard on the radio in 2005 that Brazil had 37,000 murders which was more than any country in the world at the time.

Every article I read says Jamaica has highest murder rate. I actually thought I stumbled on a gem here, but see that it is not up-to-date or accurate.

My wife is from Sao Paulo Brasil. We lived in Brasil for a couple years. I have US & Brasilian Citizenship. I can tell you first hand especially in the poor areas of Sao Paulo, Rio, and other major cities of Brasil that crime and murder is through the roof. I to wonder how Brasil failed to make the list. Something here is flawed!!

Jamaica is not on the list. With nearly 1500 murders in 2007 it should be one nearly on top of the list.
