Second, the Science Society represented a different kind of civil society from the conventional Western model: it was not an institution conceived in opposition to the state but rather one that maintained intimate and complex connections with successive governments, both national and local, throughout the Republican era.
Thus in October 1915, the Science Society renamed the Science Society of China (adding Zhongguo or China before kexueshe), was formally reorganized as a comprehensive scientific society, the first in modern Chinese history.
At this time we are still troubled that science is not being promoted adequately, troubled that science education is not being developed, and troubled that the force of science is not enough to sweep away the evil spirit that spreads all over the country.
