After finishing Afyonkarahisar High School in 1958, he graduated from the Ankara University Faculty of Law in 1962 and began his career as a judge in Ankara. Following his military service at the Military Academy, he served first as a judge in Dicle and Yerköy, and later as a supervisory judge in the High Court of Appeals in Ankara. During his 7-year presidency term, he was a firm defender of secularist principles of the Republic of Turkey, thus he vetoed some bills legislated by the Justice and Development Party. He was trusted by the secular élite as a guaranteer of the secular republic. He wasn't a public figure, and he was known by his humble personality. During his presidency he has forgiven and released 260 convicted felons, 202 of which were captured terrorists. Many of these terrorists have joined back to their organizations, took part in terrorist activities and some have been killed in battle with Turkish Armed Forces.[1]
