Mole Salamanders

Yellow Spotted Salamander
Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Lissamphibia
Order: Caudata
Family: Ambystomatidae
Genera

  Ambystoma
  Rhyacosiredon

Mole salamanders (family Ambystomatidae) are secretive salamanders which spend most of their adult life underground or under cover. Previously also sometimes called Amblystoma, but this has been deprecated since around the turn of the 20th century.

This family includes:

  • Genus Ambystoma
    • Blunt-Headed Salamander (Ambystoma amblycephalum)
    • Anderson's Salamander (Ambystoma andersoni)
    • Ringed Salamander (Ambystoma annulatum)
    • Streamside Salamander (Ambystoma barbouri)
    • Delicate-Skinned Salamander (Ambystoma bombypellum)
    • California Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma californiense)
    • Flatwoods Salamander (Ambystoma cingulatum)
    • Lake Patzuaro Salamander (Ambystoma dumerilii)
    • Yellow-Headed Salamander (Ambystoma flavipiperatum)
    • Northwestern Salamander (Ambystoma gracile)
    • Granular Salamander (Ambystoma granulosum)
    • Jefferson Salamander (Ambystoma jeffersonianum)
    • Blue-spotted Salamander (Ambystoma laterale)
    • Lake Lerma Salamander (Ambystoma lermaensis)
    • Mabee's Salamander (Ambystoma mabeei)
    • Long-toed Salamander (Ambystoma macrodactylum)
    • Spotted Salamander (Ambystoma maculatum)
    • Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum)
    • Marbled Salamander (Ambystoma opacum)
    • Puerto Honda Stream Salamander (Ambystoma ordinarium)
    • Tarahumara Salamander (Ambystoma rosaceum)
    • Mole Salamander (Ambystoma talpoideum)
    • Taylor's Salamander (Ambystoma taylori)
    • Small-mouthed Salamander (Ambystoma texanum)
    • Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum)
    • Mexican Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma velasci)
  • Genus Rhyacosiredon
    • Mountain Stream Salamander (Rhyacosiredon altimirani)
    • Leora's Salamander (Rhyacosiredon leorae)
    • Michoacan Stream Salamander (Rhyacosiredon rivularis)

The genus Rhyacosiredon is sometimes used as an synonym for the Ambystoma, as in the cladistic view of the mole salamanders it makes the genus Ambystoma paraphyletic.

The genera Dicamptodon and Rhyacotriton were formerly included in this family, but are now usually placed into their own families Dicamptodontidae and Rhyacotritonidae.

BioMed Central | Full text | Gene order data from a model amphibian (Ambystoma): new perspectives on vertebrate genome ... (6148 words)
Ambystoma has experienced a rate of genome rearrangement that is substantially lower than mammalian species but similar to that of chicken and fish.
Ambystoma has a much larger genome and haploid complement of 14 chromosomes [20], whereas chicken has a haploid complement of 39 chromosomes [9].
The Ambystoma map and reference genomes were formatted as concatenated (across linkage groups or chromosomes) series of orthologs and input into the program FISH [26].
Tiger Salamanders (713 words)
Of the 6 subspecies of Ambystoma tigrinum discussed here it is the Eastern Tiger Salamander that may some day be regarded as a separate species, in which case it would be given the name Ambystoma tigrinum, while the remaining would be grouped under the name Ambystoma mavortium while retaining the original subspecies name.
In the Barred Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum mavortium) the dark spots are larger than in the last two and tend to form the background color, while there are yellow bars or stripes that extend from the belly to the middle of the back, though these are irregular in form.
The Sonoran Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum stebbinsi - not shown) is restricted to the highlands of the Huachuca and Patagonia Mountains in Arizona.
