At the 1976 Summer Olympics two archery events were contested.
It was the second iteration of the modern archery competition in the Olympics, following the same format as in the 1972 Summer Olympics.
Luann Ryon of the United States broke both of her countrywoman Doreen Wilber's Olympic records in the event (FITA round and double FITA round) on her way to the second straight gold medal for an American in the women's competition.

In the bid to organise the Olympics, Montreal defeated Moscow and Los Angeles, which would organise the 1980 and 1984 Olympics.
In a protest to a tour of South Africa by the New Zealand rugby team, Tanzania lead a boycott of 22 African nations as the IOC refused not to admit the New Zealand team.
The Olympic Stadium, a daring design of French architect Roger Taillibert[?], remains a lasting monument to the huge deficit, as it never had an effective retractable roof, and the tower was only completed after the Olympics.
