Biography

Aristarkh Lentulov was born on January 4, 1882 in the village Nizhnee Lomovo near Penza in the family of rural priest. He learned painting in the Penza and Kiev artistic schools, then in the private studio of D. N. Kardovsky in Saint Petersburg. In 1910 he became one of the organizers of artistic association "Jack of Diamonds". Even since the pre-revolutionary times Lentulov was actively involved in various theatrical projects, decorating plays in the Kamerny Theatre (Merry Wives of Windsor, 1916) and contributing sets for production of Scriabin's "Prometheus" in the Bolshoi Theatre (1919). In 1928 Lentulov entered into the Society of Moscow artists, which was composed of artists formerly associated with the Jack of Diamonds. Lentulov became its chairman and started teaching. Lentulov died on April 15, 1943 in Moscow. He is buried on the Vagankovo Cemetery.
