Biography

Aristarkh Lentulov was born on January 4, 1882 in the village Nizhnee Lomovo near Penza in the family of rural priest. He learned painting in the Penza and Kiev artistic schools, then in the private studio of D. N. Kardovsky in Saint Petersburg. In 1910 he became one of the organizers of artistic association "Jack of Diamonds". Even since the pre-revolutionary times Lentulov was actively involved in various theatrical projects, decorating plays in the Kamerny Theatre (Merry Wives of Windsor, 1916) and contributing sets for production of Scriabin's "Prometheus" in the Bolshoi Theatre (1919). Jack of Diamonds

In 1928 Lentulov entered into the Society of Moscow artists, which was composed of artists formerly associated with the Jack of Diamonds. Lentulov became its chairman and started teaching. Lentulov died on April 15, 1943 in Moscow. He is buried on the Vagankovo Cemetery. In her memoirs, Lentulov’s daughter recounted that in this painting, her father wanted to see “every part of the cathedral at the same time,” from every side.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, Lentulov continued artistic research into the builders of old Russia, while using new painting techniques to ensure that the volumes of the architectural marvel of the sixteenth century could be accommodated in the two dimensional space of the painting.
Lentulov called the principle upon which his works were based at the time “the dynamics of colour.”
