Artyom comprises a chain of small settlements paralleling the Vladivostok—Nakhodka highway. It is built mainly with one-, two-, and five-story houses of stone and brick, though a comparatively large number of wooden private houses can be seen. Founded in 1924 near the Zybunny pit mine it is named after a famous revolutionary Artyom (F.A. Sergeyev). In 1938, it was granted town status.
