The Bahujan Samaj Party (Hindi: बहुजन समाज पार्टी) is a national political party in India with socialist leanings. It was formed to chiefly represent Dalits, who are thought by some to be at the bottom of the Indian caste system, and claims to be inspired by the philosophy of Ambedkar. The BSP was founded by the high-profile charismatic leader Kanshi Ram in 1984. The party's political symbol is an elephant. In the 13th Lok Sabha (1999-2004) it had 14 (out of 545) members and currently in the 14th Lok Sabha has 19. The party has its main base in Uttar Pradesh of Indian state, in UP the BSP has formed government several times. Mayawati is the President of the party and has been so for many years. The deep and mutual hostility between the BSP and the Samajwadi Party – the other leading state party in Uttar Pradesh, whose support is mainly obtained from the OBC or predominantly shudra classes has led the BSP into allying itself many times with its erstwhile ideological enemies, the BJP. Currently the party supports a Congress led alliance called the United Progressive UPA in the Indian Government.[1] Bahujan Samaj Party, Nepal (Majority Societ Party, Nepal) is a Nepalese political party. ...

BSP as Key-Holder to Presidential race Mayawati has emerged key player in the election of next president of india on 17 july as reported in press.Having made it entirely on her own sweat to UP assembly this time, question on everyone's mind is whom she is going to support as next president of India. Will it be from Congress,BJP or Left? Or will she choose to send her own ordinary supporter from BSP in UP in Rashtrapati Bhawan forcing other national parties to fall in line?National press has hailed her as an astute political strategist, master tactician. If other parties ignore her ordinary candidate, could it mean that these other parties shall face the wrath of ordinary UP electorate in 2009 general elections only to be routed at hands of BSP? Mayawati has successfully weaned away caste consciouness from the minds of ordinary UP electorate cutting across the broad spectrum of social hierarchy.Other question hanging heavily on minds of UP electorate is will Mayawati shrewdly choose to send an ordinary Thakur from UP itself as next Indian President to cut to size her arch foe firm of messers Mulayam and Amar?Questions are being asked in power corridors could this dark horse be Sher Singh?[1]
