Bears Discover Fire unsurprisingly involves bears discovering fire. However it also involves the media cultures reaction to that. Further it concerns family and growing old in the South. The author is himself a Southerner.
A myth concerning the story states that it began as a straight literary story about the South that got sold to an SF editor. The SF editor wanted it though so suggested "make the bears discover fire so I can buy it." This story apparently began as a joke, but has turned into an accusation in some circles. At present all parties involved dismiss the story as never happening.
Bears rest and sleep in day beds, such as a depression next to a log, under the roots of a fallen tree, or in dense brush, or out in a grassy meadow.
Bears can be active at any time of the day or night but are more often encountered at those times, and bears that are trying to avoid people may be more active when fewer people are out.
A bear drawn to a camp by the smell of buried food scraps or garbage in a fire pit may discover containers of food on a picnic table and learn that campgrounds and campsites provide easy meals.
