The Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) is one of the most prominent scientific research institutions in France. It conducts researchs in all of scientific areas, divided between 8 departments:

chemical sciences
sciences of the Universe

sciences of life and society.
It runs its laboratories either directly or in association with universities, other higher education institutions, or other research institutions.
CNRS has 26,000 employees (among which 11,600 researchers and 14,400 engineers and technical and administrative staff).
The 1,260 CNRS service and research units are spread throughout the country and cover all fields of research.
CNRS research departments and institutes encompass virtually all fields of knowledge : Mathematics, Computer Sciences, Physics, Earth Sciences and Astronomy (MIPPU department), Chemistry, Life Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Sustainable Development, and Engineering.
