In later years, Chilangos have come to embrace the term and use it with pride, but they also consider that any non-Chilango that uses the term does it in a derogatory fashion.

Two less widely used terms for a resident of Mexico City are "Defeño" and "Capitalino", which can also be used both in a positive or a derogatory sense, although the latter is generally accepted as a neutral demonym which can even be used in formal speech.

"Defequeño" is another slang name for a person who lives in Mexico City, though this one is undoubtedly derogatory as it comes from the Spanish word "defecar" ("to defecate" in English). Other variants include "defequense".
