Galaxy Entertainment was created in 1999 by Ellis Jacob (former Cineplex COO) and Steven Brown (former Cineplex CFO); Mr. Jacob subsequently became the chief executive of Cineplex Galaxy. Onex was the controllng shareholder of both Loews and Galaxy at the time of the merger. Approximately half of the company's theatres operate under the Cineplex Odeon Cinemas and Galaxy Cinemas brands. Cineplex Odeon generally denotes a more expansive movie house with a wide variety of movies and concessions available. Galaxy Cinemas are found in mid-sized markets and are slightly smaller but nonetheless provide a "quality" moviegoing experience, including stadium-style seating and branded concessions; since the Cineplex / Galaxy merger many smaller Cineplex theatres have been renovated to the Galaxy concept.
