Encyclopedia > Comparison between U.S. states and countries nominal GDP
US states shown with other countries on map of nominal GDP
US states shown with other countries on map of nominal GDP

This is a comparison between US states and countries' nominal Gross Domestic Product. Many of the states of the United States have large Gross Domestic Product (called gross state product) which would rank highly on a list of countries world GDP. For instance, California would have the 7th highest GDP in the world if thought of as a country (not including the US as a whole, if so, it would be 8th). Even the lowest ranked US state, Vermont, would still be 74th out of some 200 countries.
