This method was invented during WW2 to increase the weight of tea that could be packed in a sack or chest. Since its advent in the late 1950s, this process has been widely used by most of the tea factories in India and Sri Lanka. This style of manufacture has the advantage that the finished product brews quickly and yields more cups per kg. CTC, which stands for "crush, tear, curl," is used primarily for lower-quality leaves.
But CTC has an important and legitimate role in the tea industry: since it is a mechanized process, it allows for the rapid processing of a high volume of leaves which otherwise would go to waste.

Tea manufacturing is normally carried out in two ways, (i) CTC and (ii) orthodox.
CTC refers to the Crush, Tear and Curl process where the withered green leaves are passed in-between two rollers rotating in opposite directions.
In orthodox type of manufacturer, the withered leaves are rolled on specially designed orthodox rollers which twists and crushes the leaves thereby rupturing the cells.
