Chemical structure of cyanidin
Chemical structure of cyanidin

Cyanidin, or flavan-3-ol, is a natural organic compound which is classified as a flavonoid and an anthocyanin. It is a pigment found in many redberries including but not limited to bilberry, blackberry, blueberry, cherry, cranberry, elderberry, hawthorn, loganberry and raspberry. It can also be found in other fruits such as apples and plums. The highest concentrations of cyanidin are found in the skin of the fruit. Effects on the human body

Cyanidin, like other anthocyanins, has antioxidant and radical-scavenging effects which, protect cells from oxidative damage and reduces the risk of heart diseases and cancer. Studies in Japan carried out by Takanori Tsua et al. led to the theory that cyanidin may aid in preventing obesity and diabetes as well as containing anti-inflammatory effects. Other studies have generally shown that cyanidin may have an important future role in cancer therapy. To meet Wikipedias quality standards, this article or section may require cleanup. ... Anthocyanins : by Ray Sahelian, M.D. Anthocyanin research (3334 words)
Nine anthocyanin fractions reflecting monoglycosides of delphinidin, cyanidin, petunidin and malvidin were obtained and all were shown to suppress the photooxidation of A2E, at least in part, by quenching singlet oxygen.
Mulberry anthocyanins, cyanidin 3-rutinoside and cyanidin 3-glucoside, exhibited an inhibitory effect on the migration and invasion of a human lung cancer cell line.
In this study, we first observed that cyanidin 3-rutinoside and cyanidin 3-glucoside (extracted from Morus alba L. mulberry) exerted a dose-dependent inhibitory effect on the migration and invasion, of highly metastatic A549 human lung carcinoma cells in absence of cytotoxicity.

Cyanidin is also an anthocyanidin and differs from pelargonidin by the addition of an OH to the meta position on the right hand ring and its structure is shown below:
Cyanidin produces a magenta colour, which contributes to the colour of ripe flcurrants.
Cyanidin is responsible for both the colour of the blue cornflower (in basic conditions) and the red poppy (in acidic conditions).
