He was a member of the World Class Wreckin' Cru along with Dr. Dre. He later became a founding member of the pioneering gangsta rap group N.W.A. (comprised of Yella, Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren, and Eazy-E). Along with Dre he produced Eazy-E's debut album Eazy Duz It and all three N.W.A. albums. These four albums would sell millions of copies. It was also during this time he would shoot pornographic films under his alias Tha Kidd. In 1995 Eazy-E died suddenly of AIDS and the label was in disarray. Yella remained to piece together Eazy's final album however struggled to track down all the material Eazy had recorded with various producers.

• When the N.W.A. reunion talks were occurring around 2000 and a couple of songs were recorded, Yella was not invited to participate, and did not feature on Chin Check or Hello.

• N.W.A. as of 2007 lined up as MC Ren, Ice Cube, and Dr. Dre as the original members with the addition of The D.O.C.. However early this April, two months after the members reunited for future plans, the four N.W.A. members plus Snoop Dogg persuaded Yella to rejoin as their DJ and coProducer. Yella responded April 8th, 2007 saying he will rejoin N.W.A. with Ice Cube, Ren, Dre, and the D.O.C.
