It may be hard to conceive the City of Dayton divided into two communities, but today's Dayton Kentucky is the result of a merger between the communities of Brooklyn and Jamestown that took place in 1867.
In Jamestown a ferry operated at the foot of what's now Dayton Street, and laws were passed prohibiting nude swimming in the Ohio River during daylight hours, and prohibiting dogs from running loose.
A newspaper account in 1866 stated the name selected was "Dayton" after Dayton, OH that was founded in 1803.

These original founders and settlers of Dayton were faced with disaster in the winter of 1798-99 when it was discovered that congress had refused to legalize the original sale of the land.
Dayton itself was incorporated in 1805, with a government of seven trustees acting as council, a supervisor and a Marshall.
Since then, Dayton has continued to progress in a growth of industrial power, in its blossoming as a center of high technology, research and information services, and in its development as a service and distribution center.
