Erastus (Deaf) Smith (April 19, 1787November 30, 1837) was an American frontiersman noted for his part in the Texas revolution and the army of the Republic of Texas. He fought at the Battle of San Jacinto. After the war, Deaf Smith led a company of Texas Rangers.


Deaf Smith County is named in his honor.

Deaf Smith County is a county located in the state of Texas.
In 1876 the state legislature identified and named the county, but it was not organized until 1890, with the town of LaPlata as the original county seat.
The county was named for Erastus "Deaf" Smith (1787-1837), a hearing impaired scout and soldier who served in the Texas Revolution.
