A death toll is the number of dead as a result of war, violence, accident, natural disaster, extreme weather, or disease.


Below is a list of death tolls for various infamous incidents. Most numbers are estimates and are often in dispute. The incidents are ranged by the highest estimate given.

BAGHDAD -- The death toll among Iraqi civilians in insurgency-related violence last year was more than twice as high as that of the country's soldiers and police combined, according to government figures obtained yesterday by The Associated Press.
