It was in charge of the Deutsche Mark (German Mark, the German currency, in former times in the US also known as "Deutschmark") until the Euro came into existence. The Bundesbank in Frankfurt, or "Buba" for short, was one of the most respected of all central banks for its control of inflation through the later half of the 20th century. It was the first central bank to be given independence, with full instrument and goal independence, leading this form of central bank to be referred to as the Bundesbank model. The New Zealand model, on the other hand, has a goal (i.e. inflation target) set by the government (as was the case at the Bank of England until 1997 when it was allowed full control of interest rate setting and government intervention ceased).
