As Donald blazes through his screenplay, Charlie slowly picks away at his story, in which author Susan Orlean (Meryl Streep) chronicles John Laroche (Chris Cooper), a scruffy but devoted plant enthusiast who tries to save rare species of orchids by stealing them from their natural home in the swamps of Florida.
Donald Kaufman didn't really want anything out of life but he lucked into all the things his brother Charlie was desperate for and wrote a hit script called The 3.
Donald suggests Flowers for Algernon as an example of a movie about flowers, to which Charlie replies, "It's not about flowers; besides it's not a movie." In fact, the book had been filmed twice: once as the theatrical release Charly (1968) and once for television as Flowers for Algernon (2000).
