A very familiar face on Spanish-language TV, Schmidt's parents emigrated from Puerto Rico and settled in New York City, where she was born. When she was about 6 years, her parents returned to Puerto Rico. After receiving her primary and secondary education, Schmidt enrolled in college and attended Iowa State University, where she majored in journalism. She also completed a Master's program in Journalism. In 1988, she moved to Puerto Rico where she started her career as a newscaster for WSJN-TV (Channel 24). In 1992 she went to Chicago where she was offered a job with channel 44 (Telemundo), and shortly after joined the Univision family as the main news anchor for WCIU-TV (Channel 26) and subsequently WGBO-TV (Channel 66), when Univision acquired that station. She lived in Chicago for almost 11 years before she was offered the position of anchor woman in Telefutura - the fastest qrowing Spanish speaking broadcast network in the United States. On December 2001, Schmidt accepted the offer and moved to Miami, Florida where Telefutura has its headquarters, and became the news anchor of "Noticias al Minuto" (Latest Minute News). She provided viewers with culturally relevant up-to-the-minute news reports, since the launch in 2002. On September 29, 2005 Schmidt was officially named as the new anchor of the weekend edition of "Noticiero Univision". Together with Sergio Urquidi has been co-anchoring Univision's Noticiero. Among the important events which Schmidt has covered are the terrorists attacks on September 11, 2001 in New York, the panic caused by the Anthrax threat in Washington D.C, and the execution of the Oklahoma bomber Timothy McVeigh.
