Emperor Tang Zhaozong (唐昭宗李晔 867-904), born Li Ye, was the 19th emperor of the Tang dynasty of China. He reigned from 889 to 904. During Zhaozong's reign, the Tang dynasty have fallen into disarray and rebellions broke out throughout the country. Ever since rebellions broke out in 859, a series of successive rebellions followed and the Tang dynasty have endured over 25 years of non-stop violence ending with the Huang Chao rebellion in 884 when Zhu Wen sided with the Tang. By Zhaozong's reign, the Tang dynasty exist all but in name. Corruptions and civil unrest have paralyzed the government and Zhu Wen saw the opportunity to take control of the empire by murdering Zhaozong in 904. The neighbors of the Tang empire were the Turks (Tujue 突厥), Uighurs (Huihe 回紇, later Huigu 回鶻), the Tibetian empire of Tubo 吐藩 (often read Tufan), the kingdom of Nanzhao 南詔, and the northeastern peoples of Qidan 契丹 (Khitan) and Mohe 靺鞨 (Malgal) as well as the three Korean kingdoms and Bohai 渤海 (Parhae).
Tang China established a protectorate of the pacified East (Andong duhufu 安東督護府) but was forced by Silla in 671 to withdraw to the Liaodong 遼東 area.
Third, China had lost her Western regions to the Tibetians and to the Uighurs that had advanced into these areas during the years of the rebellion.
