Family and friends Eusebius Mandyczewski was born in the village of Molodiya (then Austria-Hungary; now Ukraine, Hlybotskyi Raion) on August 18, 1857. He was the son of a Ukrainian Greek Orthodox priest. He finished his secondary studies at the upper school of Chernivtsi and simultaneously studied music under Sydir Vorobkevych. He began studies at the University of Chernivtsi, then moved to the Vienna Conservatory in 1875 and studied under Eduard Hanslick, Martin Gustav Nottebohm and Robert Fuchs. Beginning in 1879, he became a close friend of Johannes Brahms and a prominent member of the 'Brahms circle' (who aided Brahms in teaching Gustav Jenner). Career From 1879 to 1881, Mandyczewski was the conductor of the Vienna Singakademie. From 1887 to 1929, he was the archivist and librarian of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde. In 1897 he received an Honorary Doctorate from the Univeristy of Leipzig[2]. Later, in 1897, he began teaching at the Vienna Conservatory as Professor of Music History and Musical Instruments.
