Fatima Begum was born in Surat, Gujarat in 1905. Fatima Begum was married to the Nawab of Sachin and was the mother of silent superstars like Zubeida, Sultana and Shehzadi. She made her debut in silent films with Veer Abhimanyu (1922). Her acting career was between 1922 and 1925 with 6 films. After she made her last film in 1925 which was Mumbai Ni Mohini, she started directing films. In 1926, when she directed Bulbul-e-Paristan, she became the First Woman Director in India. After she made her directorial debut, she continued directing films right through until 1929, when she retired. She passed away in 1983 at the age of 78.
