Encyclopedia > Francis Cugat

Background

Born on September 22, 1903, Francis Cugat was raised by his mother and father in West Virginia. His mother, Crystal(Rice)Cugat, was a factory worker, and his father, Mitch Cugat, was a dairy farm worker. Francis Cugat attended East Dauphin High School, then after he graduated, he moved to Long Island, NY in 1923. Francis attended West Islip University on Long Island, and received his bachelors' degree in Business Communications. After finishing college, he moved into a apartment in New York City, and began searching for a job. After many months of searching, Francis Cugat came across one job offer he could not refuse, which was working as an editor for the New York Times.

Career

Francis Cugat was one of the top editors of the nationally-known newspaper for nearly two decades. At the age of 46, Francis Cugat retired from working at the New York Times, and decided to go back to West Virginia to live with his dying mother (his father died in 1941). After living with his mother for three months, she died on January 17, 1950. After the death of his mother Francis Cugat became extremely depressed, and in 1951, he committed suicide. He was 48 years old. Francis Cugat was an amazingly gifted newspaper editor, and some of the stories that he actually wrote himself, have been some of the greatest articles ever published.
