Pinto studied law at the Real Universidad de San Felipe, graduating in 1808. He began a political career during the period of Chilean History known as the Independencia ("Independence"), assuming the Vice Presidency of the Republic between 1827 and 1828, and the Presidency in 1829. That same year Pinto resigned from the Presidency due to the events that led to the conservative revolution, an event that marked his retirement from public life, to which he would return in the 1840s, as a lawmaker. Pinto was married to Luisa Garmendua Aldunate and had two children, Aníbal Pinto, who would become President of Chile, and Enriqueta Pinto, future wife of President Manuel Bulnes.
