Grigore Ureche (1590 - 1647) was a Moldavian chronicler who wrote on Moldavian history in his Letopiseţul Ţării Moldovei (The Chronicles of the land of Moldavia), covering the period from 1359 to 1594. His work was essential for the Moldavian identify, that would later identify itself as Romanian. Ureche established that the Moldavian language was the same language as Wallachian and that Moldavians, Wallachians from Wallachia, and Wallachians from Transylvania, were of the same ethnicity. This doctrine would later help in the rise of nationalism, and eventually, to the unification of Moldavia and Wallachia, forming Romania.
