Story

Ichigo 100% follows the life of high school student Junpei Manaka, an aspiring movie director, and the drama and mishaps of his relationships with the girls that enter his life.

On one afternoon during school, Junpei sneaks away to the roof to see the sunset. However, upon arriving he witnesses a beautiful girl fall down right in front of him where he catches a glimpse of her strawberry-patterned panties. For Junpei it's love at first sight, however, the girl quickly runs off embarrassed. The scene of the girl behind the sunset, and her panties, motivates Junpei to find out who she is so he can make a movie. Upon further inspecting the area, he finds a notebook belonging to a girl named Aya Tojo who he hopes is the mystery girl. His hopes are dashed when he finds Aya to be just an ordinary looking girl with thick glasses and braided hair. Despite not finding his dream girl, Junpei soon discovers that Aya is a very gifted writer, having read her novel which was written in the notebook, and the two become friends.

While consulting his friends Komiyama and Okusa about the girl he saw on the rooftop that day, they suggest the mystery girl could none other than be Tsukasa Nishino, the most popular girl in school, and insist he ask her out. While following Aya's advice as well, Junpei confesses to Tsukasa in a fairly dramatic yet comical manner- while doing a pull-up. With his friends as well as Aya watching from a distance, Tsukasa suprisingly agrees to being his girlfriend. Soon after, Junpei sees the mystery girl wearing the strawberry-patterned panties run off making him realize that Tsukasa isn't the girl he's looking for.

With the high school entrance exams approaching, a new girlfriend, and the girl of his dreams he's chasing after, the troubles in Junpei's life have only begun.

The drama of the love triangle between Aya, Junpei, and Tsukasa intensifies when the three begin studying for the entrance exams early in the morning before school each day. Aya gradually starts to shed the thick librarian glasses and conservative hair style but by doing so she instantly becomes popular among the boys in school. At this point Junpei finally realizes that Aya is the girl he's been looking for all this time. Tsukasa, discovering the developing relationship between Aya and Manaka, decides to attend a different high school on the basis that she can't compete with Aya for Manaka if they end up going to the same school.

The start of high school brings more complications to Junpei's life when he receives his first video camera and meets a new girl in the process who he later finds out is one of his classmates. Sparks fly between the girl, Satsuki Kitaoji, and Junpei on their first several encounters. Despite this, Satsuki gradually takes a liking to Junpei. After a series of mishaps and accidents resulting in injuries, the two become very good friends, though this comes at a cost of causing tension between Aya and Junpei.

After finding out that the Film Studies Club is no more, Manaka restarts the club with the new friends he made and some old: the lady-crazed Hiroshi Sotomura, middle school friend Komiyama, as well as Satsuki Kitaoji. Jealous of Satsuki and mad at Junpei because of his insensitivity, Aya initially refuses Manaka's request for her to join the club yet later accepts when asked by Sotomura. Distraught about Aya, Manaka is suprised once more when Satsuki, accidently, confesses that she likes him. Junpei's life complicates further when he admits that he too likes her but also likes two other girls, all of them equally. For Satsuki, though, love is a battlefield and she is determined to win.

More drama ensues when Tsukasa, unable to stand Manaka's hesitancy in furthering their relationship, decides to break up with him. Dealing with losing Tsukasa, trying to keep composed when being hit on by Satsuki, not knowing what to do with Aya, all while juggling studies and making movies for the Film Studies Club make up Manaka's complex and comical love life which is further tempered with the introduction of long childhood friend Yui Minamito. Though Yui is not considered a potential love interest and acts more of a sister to him she manages to make things more awkward than they should. The arrival of new members, Sotomura's sister Misuzu who wants to take command in order to improve their movie making, and the impulsive childish Chinami, makes things more eventful for the Club.

The rest of Manaka's high school career deals with his handling of the girls he likes, the girls who like him, and making movies for the school's cultural festival each year. Near the end of their final year, Tsukasa breaks the web of affection surrounding Manaka by confessing her desire to become his girlfriend again in the same way Manaka confessed to her the first time- by doing a pull-up. Although Manaka cannot bring himself to respond immediately, he accepts after realizing he really loves Nishino. Though after finally choosing the girl he wants to be with, breaking the news to the others becomes a heavy task.

Despite the turn of events, Manaka and Tsukasa's time together becomes limited when she confesses that she'll be leaving for France to study pastry-making after graduation. The two spend as much time together before their final farewell when they promise to meet again when she returns to Japan.

In the epilogue four years later, the members of the Film Studies Club gather together at a restaurant in Kyoto which Satsuki owns. There everyone compares their accomplishments over the years - Tojo's writing career has flourished earning her numerous awards, Sotomura and Komiyama both run a production company with Chinami being their first model, Misuzu attends a university in Kyoto and stays close friends with Satsuki, and Manaka is slowly becoming an establised director in the film industry. Junpei and Aya reminisce about their memories and goals. Still harboring the dream to make Aya's novel, the one in her notebook back in middle school, into a movie Junpei asks for her to wait until he can make it possible. They all agree and celebrate in wait for things to come.

Afterwards, Tsukasa returns from France and continues where her relationship with Manaka had left off.

An extra chapter at the end contains a side story about Misuzu Sotomura during her first year in Kyoto as a student at and how she finds her first love in a school mate whose an aspiring manga artist.

The Ichigo 100% manga consists of 19 volumes, with a total of 167 chapters including one bonus chapter revolving around Misuzu Sotomura as the focal character. Ichigo 100% is a 167-chapter manga by Mizuki Kawashita ) that was serialized in the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 2002 volume 12 to 2005 volume 35, and collected in 19 tankōbon volumes between August 2002 and December 2005. ...

The first kanji on the last names of the four lead female characters represents a specific cardinal direction. Tō in Aya Tōjo refers to the East; Nishi in Tsukasa Nishinio refers to the West; Kita in Satsuki Kitaoji means North; and Minami in Yui Minamito means South. As well, Naka in Junpei Manaka's name means center. The author used this as a figurative diagram indicating the direction - or girl - the compass of Manaka's heart points to at any given time. In the first OVA, Manaka has a nightmare where all four girls stand around him at their respective cardinal directions.

Characters

Izumizaka High

Junpei Manaka (真中淳平 Manaka Junpei?)
Junpei Manaka
Birthday: May 10th (Taurus)
The main character in the series, Manaka is an overall average nice guy who gets strung up in numerous embarrassing but endearing romantic situations throughout middle and then highschool. Although his thoughts on girls can get quite perverted on occasion, his gentleness and kindness, as well as his selflessness at times, is what attracts them to him. His indecisiveness between the girls he likes- Aya, Satsuki, and Nishino- and inability to decipher their feelings is the focal point of the story. His dream is to make films as a director. While not academically gifted, he has great talent with cinematography that gradually develops as the story progresses.
Aya Tojo (東城 綾 Tōjō Aya?)
Aya Tojo
Birthday: January 14th (Capricorn)
Reserved and timid almost to a fault, Aya is the mystery girl with the strawberry panties that Manaka had been seeking out at the beginning of the series. Tou, the first portion of her name, is associated with the Eastern cardinal direction. Regarded as a shy bookwork, Aya wasn't noticed throughout middle school because of the large glasses she wore and her unattractive hairstyle, despite her figure. This all turned around after she started wearing contact lenses and letting her hair down. Aside from Satsuki, the topic of Aya's large bust size is a running comedic element in the series. A gifted writer, she won several prestigious awards for her novels and scripts. Aya played an important role in the Film Studies Club being the script writer as well as playing the heroine in their last film production. Both she and Manaka share the same dreams, to write and film respecitvely, that carry them throughout highschool and it was out of this that she developed deep feelings for him. Because of her shyness she hides her feelings from Manaka throughout most of the series despite her being the object of his affection for most of the time. It was only during the filming of their last film and after the school festival that she was able to confess to Manaka. Unfortunately her feelings weren't returned due to Manaka's relationship with Nishino. Near the end of the manga Aya was able to let go and move on. After graduation she became a successful novelist, having won numerous awards, and still cherishs the dream of Manaka's to make her notebook novel into a movie.
Satsuki Kitaoji (北大路さつき Kitaōji Satsuki?)
Satsuki Kitaoji
Birthday: May 3rd (Taurus)
Athletic, energetic, and beautiful, Satsuki is very popular among the boys in the school, mainly with the sports clubs and teams. The first part of her name, Kita, is associated with the Northern cardinal direction which has a key meaning in the series. She was an integral part of the Film Studies Club, having been asked by Manaka to join when it first formed, and starred as the heroine in their first film production. The two of them share the same interests and it was out of the fact that they were always happy around one another that she started developing strong feelings for him. Of all the girls after Manaka, Satsuki is the most confident in her love- having been the first to ever confess to him- and is constantly seen in his company. Though unlike the others, Satsuki is very aggressive, often physical, with her feelings. Coupled with her attractive figure, mainly her large bust size, she constantly tries to push herself onto Manaka. If any of the girls could be labeled as a tragic heroine it would be Satsuki. Despite her total devotion towards him, Satsuki's feelings are rarely returned. Near the end of the manga she was able to come to terms that they would only be friends, yet promises herself that the next time that they meet she would make him wish he had chosen her. After graduation she moved to Kyoto and took over ownership of a relative's restaurant which is where all the club members meet four years later at the end of the manga. She stays close friends with Misuzu Sotomura who also lives in Kyoto after having moved there for college.
Hiroshi Sotomura (外村 ヒロシ Sotomura Hiroshi?)
Close friend of Manaka, whose sole obsession in life is taking photos of pretty girls for his website, Melon100%. To this end, he initiated the re-establishment of the Film Studies Club in order to make use of school funding and facilities to expand his website. Despite his perversions, Sotomura is the number-one student in school, with grades even better than those of Toujo. He also becomes the sounding board for Manaka's various relationship problems, offering surprisingly good advice. After graduation, he is accepted into Tokyo University and later starts his own production company.
Rikiya Komiyama (小宮山 力也 Komiyama Rikiya?)
Close friend of Manaka since middle school, frequently made fun of because of his peculiar, octopus-like looks and his desperation in finding a girlfriend. Quite the pervert, he is able to entertain any girl (if only for a little while) with his gorilla and octopus impressions. Komiyama's dare in the third year of middle school caused Manaka to confess to Nishino. He joins Sotomura Productions after graduating.
Amachi (天地 Amachi?)
A true ladies' man, Amachi is the perfect gentleman, with a face to match. Manaka's rival for Toujo, though he does not pose too much of a threat. Just like Okusa, Amachi has herds of girls flocking to him, and he seems to have a compulsive necessity in helping women in need. After meeting staunch resistance to his approaches on Toujo, Amachi gives up his horde of girls as a sign of devotion to Toujo, but later returns to them after news breaks out that Toujo is not going with Manaka or him to the final school festival. Amachi managed to recognize Toujo even with her hair braided and glasses on.
Misuzu Sotomura (外村 美鈴 Sotomura Misuzu?)
  • Voiced by: Eriko Kawasaki
Birthday: May 25th (Gemini)
Tough and pretty younger sister of Hiroshi. A no-nonsense person, Misuzu installs herself as vice-president and assistant director of the Film Studies Club. One of the few female characters in the story who does not fall for Manaka; she can not stand his indecisiveness with women. When they first met she found Manaka interesting because he was critical about movies. She plays down Manaka's role in the club, but later admits (to herself) that Manaka's accomplishment in building the club from scratch is truly remarkable whereas she is just "all-talk". Idolizes Toujo for her writing ability. When Toujo confesses that she loves Manaka in a scene in their last movie, Misuzu is the only one that realizes that she was not acting, but actually expressing her true feelings. In extra chapter at the end of the manga, Misuzu falls in love with an aspiring mangaka. Misuzu and Kitaoji argue with each other often, but after graduation they both live in Kyoto and always keep in touch.
Chinami Hashimoto (端本 ちなみ Hashimoto Chinami?)
Birthday: October 16th (Libra)
Childish, impulsive, and fickle girl in the same year as Misuzu. A gold-digger through and through, she is very used to getting whatever she wants. She initially used Manaka as an excuse for dumping one of her previous "boyfriends" and eventually ended up joining the Film Studies Club. While she does not hold any genuine feelings for Manaka, she is bothered by how unremarkable she is to him. In a surprising twist, she ends up with Komiyama, the least likely person imaginable, for a short while (she later dumps him, as expected). After graduation, Hashimoto joins Sotomura Productions as a model, with Komiyama as her manager.
Okusa (大草 Ōkusa?)
One of Manaka's friends from middle school who is the star player of the soccer team. His athletic abilities and good looks make him a magnet to girls. Because of his perceived experience with girls, Manaka goes to him for advice on his girl problems early in the manga. Okusa's latent infatuation for Nishino, however, sometimes puts him—and his offered advice—at odds with Manaka.

Oumi Academy

Tsukasa Nishino (西野つかさ Nishino Tsukasa?)
Tsukasa Nishino
Birthday: September 16th (Virgo)
Considered the cutest and most popular girl at their middle school, Tsukasa became Manaka's first and only official girlfriend in the series. She is kind and easy going yet very straight-forward which often lands Manaka in hot water whenever in the presence of the other girls. Nishi, the first part of her name, is associated with the western cardinal direction. Though very mature she gets jealous of Aya whenever Manaka is around her, completely aware of their feelings for each other. At the beginning of the manga she decided to try for Izumizaka high school along with Manaka but decided to attend Omi Academy instead on the basis that she couldn't compete with Aya for Manaka if they attended the same school. Despite attracting numerous admirers wherever she goes, Tsukasa stays with Manaka throughout much of the story. She has a passion for cooking, mainly pastries, and works part-time at a French pastry shop. Her dream is to study pastry-making further in France which she accomplishes right after high school. Though not a member of the Film Studies Club Tsukasa becomes the main heroine in their second film production, having been thought to be a perfect match for the role by Misuzu without knowing her connection to the rest of the club. At the end of the manga set four years later, Tsukasa returns from France and reunites with Manaka.
Yui Minamito (南戸 唯 Minamito Yui?)
Yui Minamito
Once a neighbor and childhood friend of Manaka before moving away, Yui acts more like a sister than a friend despite being only a year younger. She isn't at all shy around Manaka and is often found sleeping in his bed naked. The first portion of her name, Minami, is associated with the southern cardinal direction. Though considered one of the four main heroines in the series, Yui is never considered a love interest nor does she ever show Manaka any affection outside of their sibbling-type relationship. She shows an extreme fondness for chocolate and cake. Though her home is in the countryside she stays with Manaka in order to try for Omi Academy. She later on meets Nishino whom she looks up to as a role model. Like the rest of the girls at her school she has an infatuation with Manaka's friend Okusa. Later on in the series she ends up moving out and living on her own, though is usually at Manaka's residence where she prefers to sleep.

Other

Kozue Mukai (向井 こずえ Mukai Kozue?)

Birthday: July 6th (Cancer) Kana Ueda ) is a seiyū who was born on June 9, 1980 in Osaka, Japan. ...

A student in the cram school Manaka and Toujo attend during their final year of high school. Although she has an attractive body, she has a chronic fear of males, freezing up and even cowering in terror in their presence. Ironically, she also tends to have very vivid romantic fantasies with those she fears. She quickly falls in love with Manaka, the first boy she feels comfortable enough to talk to. She appears to be an extreme version of Toujo; she is far more shy and reserved, and falls over just as often.
Mai Urazawa (浦沢 舞 Urazawa Mai?)

Birthday: November 29th (Sagittarius) Cram schools (also known as crammers) are specialized schools that train their students to meet particular goals, most commonly to pass the entrance examinations of high schools or universities. ...

A friend of Toujo and Mukai at cram school. She is supportive of Mukai's infatuation with Manaka, and makes it her goal to get them together, to the extent of enlisting Toujo's help. Neither Urazawa nor Mukai are aware of Toujo's hidden affection for Manaka.
Migishima
A tall, fierce-looking, and short-tempered student in the same cram school class as Manaka. He has an X-shaped scar on his forehead. A former delinquent, he became a serious student after being inspired by his homeroom adviser. He wants to become a teacher.
Satake
Migishima's friend, also in Manaka's cram school class. His family owns a small but failing business, which he hopes to take over and rebuild. He wants to be a great CEO.
Ryuuichi Higure (日暮 龍一 Higure Ryūichi?)
Tall, dark, handsome, and also a world-famous pastry chef. His grandmother owns the shop where Nishino works. He is the main attraction whenever he returns to work from his travels abroad, and while he has fallen for Nishino, he understands that she would rather be with Manaka. He is a genuinely nice guy, once going to great lengths to help Manaka in a minor situation even before they got to know each other.
The Old Man
The short, 72-year-old manager of the movie theater where Manaka works part-time. He is a pervert who gets passing girls wet by dousing them with water so they have little choice but to change into the clothes he offers. He especially likes Nishino, and orders cakes from the pastry shop she works at just to have her deliver them in person. He has a wealthy son who owns a mansion and a karaoke building.
Shotaro Toujou (東城正太郎 Tōjō Shōtarō?)
Aya Toujo's younger brother. Although they are actual siblings, Shotaro is much taller than Aya and there is little family resemblance between the two. He was Aya's date for the Ran-Sen Festival during the main cast's last year at Izumisaka, and because Aya kept this from everyone, it caused some misunderstanding with Manaka and Amachi. It is possible that Kawashita intentionally kept Shotaro from meeting the rest of the characters for this purpose.
Shiori Kurokawa (黒川 栞 Kurokawa Shiori?)
Manaka's math teacher and advisor to the Film Club. Beautiful, busty, and a frequent drinker, she is the classic irresponsible adult archetype, tending to spend the prize money of the Film Studies Club on frivolous pursuits like visits to the salon. Despite this, she is quite supportive of the club, being one of the original founding members and the main female protagonist in the club movie that inspired Manaka to push through with his directorial dreams.
Shuu Kadokura
A professional director and alumnus of Izumizaka interested in Manaka's films. To improve Manaka's cinematography he acts as Manaka's senpai. He has messy black hair and thick-framed glasses.

Anime

TV Series

Ichigo 100% was adapted into a 12-episode anime TV series by Madhouse. It aired across Japan on Animax and TV Asahi (13 episodes were created, 13th being the special). Each episode roughly covers two chapters from the manga, which makes each episode contain two scenarios or chapters. The timeframe that the anime spans is much shorter than that of the manga.
