Indonesia Raya (composed in 1924, "Indonesia Raja" in old Indonesian spelling) is the national anthem of the Republic of Indonesia. The song was introduced by its composer, Wage Rudolf Supratman, at 28 October 1928 in a national youth convention in Batavia (now Jakarta). The song marked the birth of the all-archipelago nationalist movement in Indonesia that supported the idea of one single "Indonesia" as successor to the Dutch East Indies, then split into several colonies. The first paper to openly publish the text "Indonesia Raya" - a daring act of defiance towards the Dutch authorities - was the Chinese Indonesian weekly Sin Po, a fact still noted with pride by the Chinese Indonesian community. English Lyrics

Indonesia my native land, the land where I shed my blood.
There I stand, a guide for my mother. (Note: "mother" here refers to ibu pertiwi which means 'motherland')
Indonesia my nationality, my nation and my country.
Come, Let us exclaim "Indonesia unite!"
Live my land, live my country,
My nation, my people, as a whole.
Awaken your spirit, Awaken your body
For Indonesia's greatness!

CHORUS:
Great Indonesia, independent and free,
My land, my country, which I love.
Great Indonesia, independent and free,
Live Great Indonesia! (*2)

Indonesia, an eminent land, our wealthy land.
There I shall be; forever.
Indonesia an ancient land, of our ancestors.
Let us pray for Indonesia's prosperity.
May her soil be fertile and spirited her soul,
her nation, her people.
Mindful is her being and her senses
For Indonesia's greatness!

CHORUS

Indonesia, a sacred country, a holy country.
There we stand, guarding our true Mother.
Indonesia, a gleaming country, a country we love with all our heart.
Let us vow that "Indonesia exists through the ages!"
Blessed be her people and her sons,
All her islands, and her seas.
Let us advance the country and advance her guidence
For Indonesia's greatness!.

CHORUS
