Jay Bennett was a significant driving force behind the evolving sound, increasingly mature songwriting and success of the twice-Grammy-nominated Wilco for 6 years.
Bennett also contributed heavily to Mermaid Avenue, Volumes I and II - a joint project with British songwriter Billy Bragg, brought previously unreleased Woody Guthrie lyrics to light (and to life).
Among the many songs written or co-written by Bennett are the singles, "California Stars" and "Secret of the Sea."Since leaving Wilco, Jay teamed up with his long-time friend and musical collaborator, Edward Burch, to release the critically-aclaimed The Palace at 4am (part 1).
Jay Bennett (Wilco) - Magnificent Defeat :: Not Lame Recordings - power pop and melodic rock record label, music and CDs (365 words)
Chicago multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett has accomplished enough in his solo career to rid himself of the "ex-Wilco" moniker.
Bennett has a uniquely nasal vocal delivery which can too often evoke Elvis Costello, but his ear for pure pop grandeur is palpable on "Wide Open," which could be an outtake from Fleetwood Macs Rumors, and the guitar-driven "Replace You," complete with its meaty Hammond accompaniment.
Jay Bennett`s fourth solo effort, The Magnificent Defeat, is as dizzying and dazzling as anything he and his former bandmates put together, and it`s nowhere near as mopey.
